Plot for Thesis

Did all my thesis plots with it and it’s just PERFECT!

ChristophNen v2.00 · 12 years ago

This saved me a couple of times when all other plotting apps failed (e.g. for density plots). The version 2 sports a modernized interface which makes it even more fun to use. Thanks for creating this!

almost perfect

very good, but need more friendly user interface (and after I would buy it)

Awesome app, easy to use

Awesome app, very easy to use, free and Mac native! I replaced Origin Pro for simple and quick data visualization of electrophysiological data :)

Excelent Work

What can I say….. Title speaks for it self. Thank you

I work with lots of data on a daily basis and for years now my plots not only have scientific meaning but beauty as well. This is a nice upgrade that I enjoy using for my plots everyday.

I’ve used Plot 1.x several times over the years to deal with large dataset that Excel and similar programs could not handle. Though I’ve switched over to using R and Python for handling such datasets, I still use Plot to quickly sort through data and get a rough idea of how I would like to display this data for reporting purposes. I’m very pleased to see development continue on this app and look forward to exploring its new look and features. Just on past experience alone this app gets five stars from me!

I have relied on this application since Mr. Wesemann released it for the NeXTstep operating system. While not completely intuitive, the application is BY FAR the best application for creating publication quality scientific plots of data. The scientific community of Macintosh users should support his endeavor.

This program “plot” used to be one of the best 2D graphics programs out there coming from the next-step era. It gave the user excellent control over the details of the plot and the fitting capability was quite good. plot stopped working and plot2 was born. It could do almost nothing when it was first released - but - O.K. - it could be slowly improved. But it nerver was. After many updates plot2 finally reached the state of ultimate dysfunctionality. Forget data fitting - that never worked with plot 2.0 - I’d be happy if it could actually open the data files I once plotted with “plot”. My recommendation to whoever develops this software is to remove it asap from the App Store, make it work and then make it available again. There are good commercial alternatives such as “Kaleidagraph” and free alternatives such as “gnuplot”, infinitely more capable than plot 2.0.

I am still trying to get used to the new interface, but the concept of this plot is phenomenal. Normalizing spectra, translating them are a breeze. I would be very happy to see the following issues addressed for its next version: 1. Accurate exports of large datasets. Currently if you plot/stack large datasets, the plot appearance when you copy/export them can be different when you change the window width. Not every points were plotted. 2. Stacking, 3D stacking. 3. Faster, better performance in handling large data sets (“speed mode”)

It crashes crazily after I updated to OS X 10.11 El Capitan… :(

Best plotting application

Give yourself a little time to learn it. This is not excel - you should generate your data in some other software. Then import it into this software for processing. There's a few pieces of software that I really miss when I'm using a Windows PC, and this is among those on the top of the list. I've been using it for over 10 years.

Polar

No polar plots

terrible interface

Documentation is poor and the interface is not at all intuitive.

Peculiar software

I tried an hour to figure out how to enter data and then gave up and deleted the applicaiton. If a software is not user friendly, I don't have time or patience for it.

Great, just one thing

This is a cool software. I use it for publication quality plots. There is just one problem. There is no option for a zoomed display. I work with 8 and 9 pt size fonts with plot size of 3-4 inches because I use the plots in some paper. But those plots look really small in this app. If there was some way to show a magnified plot without having to change the actual plot and font sizes, that would be great. I can use bigger sizes but then I have to scale down the plot image in the paper, and that changes the line widths and symol sizes and what not !! Just a zoomed display would solve the issue perfectly.

Plot is truly the best - no comparison!

As an academic researcher I have used this program in different incarnations (since SciPlot in NeXTStep) for the last 25+ years. It is the most powerful, fast and usable 2D plotting program I have found. I tried many others (paid, share- and freeware, GUI and command line alike) over the years but I always go back to Plot. It provides full control to all the features of the plot, including tiled graphs, powerful data manipulation, annotation, curve fitting on the fly, peak analysis, remote database access, a powerful scripting language to automate processing and many other. Written from the core to manipulate postcript/PDF, it produces lightweight graphics that can be added easily to the text editor of your choice (from LaTex to Word). Yes, it has so many features that it seems daunting at first, but the quality of the graphs is well worth the time investment. Need I say more? Yes! the developer has always been most responsive to address bugs and feature requests over the years. I cannot think of a better piece of software. Look no further, you will fall in love as I have over all these years!

Powerful but complicated

Plot2 is a very versatile tool that can make very detailed and customized plots. I use it for creating plots for scientific publications and it blows Excel out of the water. The most complex figure I have made so far with this tool is a 9-pane plot with 2-5 data series per pane. Plot2 handed this with no issues........once I knew how to do it. This leads me to the next part of the review, Plot2 is not easy to use at the beginning. It will take several hours of fiddling with the interface to figure out how everything works. There is logic to the way plots are created but it will not be apparent right away. This is nothing like excel where you can just highlight data and after a couple of clicks you have something usable. Once you know how to use the interface though the possibilities are endless. For a mac user this is the best graphical software you can get for free.

Missing Something

I was able to create a legend, label and personalize my axis, and scale the perameters, but I see no actual way to plot anything. Theres a screen with what looks like a spreadsheet but no way to enter antything, nothing is clear about how you would go about it, there aren’t even any videos that I could find for this software that aren’t just videos of people using similarly titled programs that actually work and make me wish I had a PC again. I tried for like half an hour literally going through every key command and tab. I’m not a grandpa, I’m excel certified and I have literally the most simple task possible when it comes to graphing. The interface is trash, theres no view tab which likely would solve many of this programs problems, and it honestly feels like less of a waste of time to write about this application than it does to actually use it.

Ok, 1 star is unfair since it's just an update issue

I really do like and use this, but the App Store update problem is a real issue :^(

sludtke42 · 9 years ago

Great app, but

please fix the updating problem.

htrefbdhdf · 9 years ago

Again the app is great, but has updating problem.

The 2.2.1 update to Plot2 keeps showing up in the Updates window even after the 2.2.1 update is applied. Also the version number within the updated app remains at 2.2.0 and isn’t updated to 2.2.1. Maybe this is part of the problem. This is a very nice graphing app with lots of useful features that I would give 5 stars, if it weren’t for this continual updating cycle that it’s in right now. Please correct and fix (and update the correct version number within the app itself).
